We were interested in seeing what the first half of the day had resonated with participants or what stories or ideas they had thought to talk about. Over the course of the rest of the afternoon, their submitted commonalities were transcribed and analyzed for themes and patterns.

These common themes fell into two groups: those that were later discussed formally in groups throughout the rest of the day, and those that didn’t make it into the group’s output:

Themes that were integrated into group activities:

  • The role of mental health in healthcare
  • Shared vulnerability
  • Centralized operations of healthcare
  • Health contexts (plural) and their complexity

Themes that were not integrated:

  • Non-linear or fragmented storytelling
  • Truthtelling; shades of truth; the whole truth
  • The role of creativity in medicine
  • Activism as both a health professional and as artists
  • Fragmented systems—and conversely, interdisciplinary or holistic approaches
  • Interference from tertiary systems, such as insurance and centralized pharmaceutical operations
  • The role of data—socially, philosophically, and informationally
  • Who owns stories of health? Who has authority?

Given the structure and intensity of the workshop, it’s quite reasonable to say that all of these themes were discussed further, but weren’t reflected in the final group presentations. However, those themes that were in the presentations do seem to have been prioritized.

We’ll be on the lookout for opportunities to explore all of these themes further. We also invite others to do the same in their own work with Narrative Medicine.

How To

Thresholds and Triggers are part of an active listening exercise. We often have 3 short talks from various perspectives.
